Build the Song Series

In this series, you will learn to play 4 great songs from the rock and R&B traditions. Importantly, you will also get deep insight into how these songs are constructed, which will help you to create your own original music.

There are 2 songs in a major key:

Bring It On Home to Me (Sam Cooke) and Into the Mystic (Van Morrison),

followed by 2 songs in a minor key:

Simple Man (Lynyrd Skynyrd) and Ain't No Sunshine (Bill Withers).

Instruction for each song will be organized into 4 tutorials, emailed to you weekly.

Week 1: Bass

Week 2: Harmonies (triads and chords)

Week 3: Melody

Week 4: Improvise & Create

The 10 Essential Lessons

Music is a language, but one that's easier and less time consuming to acquire than other languages. To do fun and meaningful things in music, it is imperative that you acquire the fundamentals of this language. And it will be best to acquire these fundamentals in the context of a lesson, not while also learning a song.
